Tyla takes art to another level as she served a stunning fashion statement at the MET Gala 2024 with sand.
The Water hitmaker proves to be a huge fan of nature; months after shaking the globe with water, she returns with another buzz, which is sand.
Tyla graced the Met Gala for the first time wearing a sand-designed dress.
Olivier Rousteing, creative director of Balmain, was particularly intrigued by the idea of ephemerality for Tyla’s dress. “The inspiration behind this creation stemmed from a desire to redefine boundaries and transform a transient material into an everlasting masterpiece,” he tells Vogue. “The idea of sculpting a garment from something as ephemeral as sand ignited my imagination, and I could not be happier with the end result.”
“We were looking to do something creative, something completely different for my first Met Gala,” Tyla says.
“So when Balmain showed me the idea and sketch, I just knew it was perfect. The idea was crazy, and I loved it. I’m excited and a little nervous, but I’m looking forward to having a fun night at The Met!”
Tyla stole attention on Monday night as she had to be carried up the stair at the international event.
Vidoes and photos of how she rocked the look has gone viral on social media and garnered her positive reviews.
A Twitter user wrote, “Tyla acts like she’s been here before. As if she was born with celebrity status. She has the personality, talent, charm, wit, attitude and aura of a global superstar. She was born star-ready.”

So Tyla is the only South African artist who’s invited to the Met Gala? Damn she’s gone.
