Tyla deafeats Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tems, Ayra Starr, Lojay to win the Best Afrobeats Award at 2024 VMAs
South African music star Tyla wins big at the MTV VMAs 2024, defeating Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tems, Ayra Starr, and Lojay nominated in the same category.
The hitmaker won the Best Afrobeat Song with her hit song Water.
She described the win as bitter-sweet due to the categorization of all African music as Afrobeats.
“This is so special, but also bittersweet because there is a tendency to group all artists under Afrobeats,” said the star, whose music is more closely related to Amapiano.”
“Even though Afrobeats has opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It’s more than just Afrobeats.”
“I come from South Africa, I represent my culture,” she concluded.
