SAPS reacts to claims of arresting Tebogo G. Mashego

Singer Tebogo G. Mashego, known for his hit Biri Marung, has once again found himself in the spotlight after a video of him being bundled into a police van went viral on 24 September 2025.

At first, speculation spread that the amapiano artist had been arrested for defamation following his explosive rants on social media, where he accused DJ Maphorisa of owing him R23 million and suggested that singer MaWhoo was romantically involved with the Scorpion Kings member.

Controversial blogger Musa Khawula fueled the claims by linking the incident to Mashego’s online tirades.

However, fresh reports have painted a different picture. According to an update from @CrimeWatch_RSA on X, Mashego was not arrested for defamation.

Instead, he allegedly displayed “abnormal behaviour” in public and became violent towards people without clear reason.

Bystanders reportedly called the police, and when officers arrived, they had to remove him forcefully because he resisted.

“Tebogo G. Mashego has not been arrested. Information received indicates that he displayed an abnormal behaviour and allegedly acted violently, assaulting people without apparent cause… in the interest of public safety, [police] had to forcefully remove him from the community as he was visibly resisting,” the post stated.

The footage of Mashego’s confrontation with police left social media divided. Some expressed sympathy for the embattled musician, suggesting he might be struggling with deeper issues.

@RegoSmurf wrote, “He is angry and feels let down by those he trusted. He was betrayed in the presence of his ‘safe circle’ and we’re worried by what he is saying and not concerned about what we know he is not saying.”

Others, however, were less forgiving, with users like @NtateWilliams questioning whether violent behaviour should be treated lightly.
