Black Coffee and Zakes Bantwini reunite
South Africa’s house music veterans Black Coffee and Zakes Bantwini finally shared a stage again after more than a decade apart.
The moment, which unfolded during a live performance, marked the first time in roughly 15 years that the two influential artists performed side by side, an unexpected reunion that quickly caught fans’ attention online.
For many, it felt like a full-circle moment, considering the role both musicians played in shaping the early sound of modern South African house music.
Before going their separate ways professionally, the duo were part of a creative wave that helped define the country’s soulful and Afro-house movement in the late 2000s.
During that period, Black Coffee’s production paired seamlessly with Zakes Bantwini’s songwriting and vocals, resulting in collaborations that left a lasting mark.
Among their most memorable joint efforts is “Juju,” released in 2011, which remains one of the last major tracks they worked on together.
Their earlier work, including contributions to Black Coffee’s projects like Have Another One and Home Brewed, laid a foundation for a sound that would later gain international recognition.
Over the years, both artists went on to build successful careers individually, making their long absence from each other’s creative space even more noticeable.
Taking to the mic during their recent performance, Zakes Bantwini acknowledged the significance of the reunion and the journey that led them back to that shared moment.
“I don’t know the last time I stood to my brother right here and shared a microphone, probably 15 years ago and today marks that the world has been meaning to have us standing next to each other but because of you we did,” he said.
He went on to reflect on the deeper role music has played in their lives, adding: “Music to us has always been more than just notes, it has always spoken to us in different languages, it has touched us all spiritually and otherwise but our introduction to music and the love of music became so colourful because there pain in our lives.”
