How COVID-19 Lockdown helped the South African music industry

The South African Music Industry is undoubtedly one of the benefactors of 2020/2021 COVID-19 Lockdown.

Most music artists like DJ ZInhle, Cassper Nyovest, AKA and others spoke of the hardship experienced during that period, however, the after-effect of the lockdown is blatant.

SA music industry is quite large, as it comprises of different music genres, but the reigning genre for now is Amapiano, and the sound is gradually going global, as it’s infiltrated some countries outside Africa.

Then, how has the Lockdown being of great benefit to the South African Music Industry?

The universe experienced the unusual, and everyone fought for survival, by avoiding to get the virus, hence there was world-wide lockdown, or in-other to be more specific, there was a nationwide lockdown in SA.

Everyone was ordered to stay at home, including music artists, who were used to moving from shows to shows, and studio to studio.

People tried improvising while at home for survival, but at the long run, people testified to being bored, which made the long-existent, Technology become more relevant.

Phones and PCs became very useful; the internet was never given a break and creatives were birthed, which led to the emergence of Tik Tok and Thriller.

These Applications were greatly used by people, but do you know what else it did? It was instrumental in promoting songs and videos.

Speaking of promoting songs – Amapiano songs travelled beyond Mzansi borders, thanks to Tik Tok users.

Since Lockdown got relaxed to Level 1 in South Africa, there’s been a constant release of hit songs, not just from known-artists but from new talents.

The list of fast-rising stars and hitmakers are gradually becoming unending; some of these stars are: Lady Du, Boohle, TxC, Sir Trill, Boohle, Blxckie, Daliwonga, Young Stunna, Felo Le Tee, Tyler ICU, Kamo Mphela, and many others.

The aforementioned names dropped their hit songs during and after lockdown.

Is the music industry that cheerful to welcome new and upcoming talents, or music artists have figured how to gain access into the industry via technology?

Being idle during lockdown unlocked the creativity of most talents, and even unveiled the eyes of men and women to using technology to achieve success.

Hence, the constant production of hit songs and new artists.

The bombardment of skilled musicians and talented vocalists during and after covid-19 lockdown in South Africa has avoided the music industry from getting withered.

Music producers and DJs now travel to other countries even at the international level to perform local* songs.

Though, we can’t snub the sufferings of SA music artists during Lockdown, but music-wise, the gain is flagrantly more than the loss.
