Rethabile Khumalo to honour her late mom with a concert
Singer Rethabile Khumalo is preparing to honour her late mother, Winnie Khumalo, with a special concert that will celebrate what would have been the veteran’s 30th anniversary in the music industry.
Winnie, who passed away on 7 January after years of battling health complications, had dreamed of marking her three decades in music.
Though her untimely passing cut those plans short, her daughter is determined to fulfil her wishes.
During a recent visit to her mother’s grave, Rethabile found the motivation to turn the idea into reality.
“I spoke to her as if she were still here. I thanked her for everything she gave me and promised to make her proud,” she told Sunday World.
“Visiting her grave is always emotional, but it’s also grounding. It reminds me that she’s still watching over me.”
The Live My Life hitmaker revealed that the event, titled Live Your Life Legacy Concert, will take place on 4 October at Soweto Meat Lovers Restaurant & Bar Lounge in Protea Glen.
The line-up will feature artists who were close to Winnie and shared the stage with her over the years, including Sello “Chicco” Twala, DJ Sbu, Trompies, and Nokwazi Dlamini.
“The line-up is made up of people she loved and admired and some whom she shared the stage with in the past,” Rethabile explained.
Winnie Khumalo’s career began when she was a young girl, eventually becoming a sought-after backing vocalist for icons like Brenda Fassie, Brothers of Peace, and Pure Magic.
For Rethabile, music was always her mother’s lifeline.
“Music was my mother’s heartbeat – it’s how she expressed herself and connected with people,” she said.
“There was no better way to honour her than through a show where her story, voice, and influence could live on. A celebration allows us to remember her joyfully, full of life, and not just the painful period we are experiencing in her absence.”
